CINEMA EVENINGS CONTINUE AT MODA SAHNESİ...
Psike Istanbul Cinema Evenings continue its fourth year in collaboration with Moda Sahnesi. 2014-2015 film discussions are centered on the theme of “The Fires Within.” The sessions that are held once a month on Wednesday evenings will include film screenings followed by a discussion of the film through a psychoanalytic perspective with Psike Istanbul member psychoanalysts and psychoanalyst candidates with the active participation of directors, actors, experts and the audience.
“THE FIRES WITHIN”
TRAUMA: INDIVIDUAL AND COLLECTIVE
Trauma manifests with the effect of experiences that create violent stimulation in the psyche, which cannot be palliated or transformed with the tools available to the inner world. In the face of an experience of unforeseeable scope, quality and severity, the psyche experiences a deep desperation. The traumatic experience with its unprocessable nature invades and engrosses the inner world as a raw phenomenon. It defies time with its non-metabolizing and indigestible character. Subsequently, when stimuli that are clues to the traumatic experience stimulate the psyche, the trauma returns in its raw state of the very first day. This unquenchable fire does not remain limited to the individual but also affects the people she or he is in contact with. It is transmitted as heritage from one generation to the next.
Similar to the trauma experienced by the individual, communities of people may also become victim to these indigestible experiences. Traumatized societies are desperate with psychologically and culturally constricted and blunted symbolic coping mechanisms.
The forth film we are going to view/work through on the theme of “The Fires Within” is Zefir (2010) directed by Belma Baş. The film that won the Best Script Award in the 30th Istanbul International Film Festival focuses on Zephyr, a strong-willed adolescent girl. Zephyr spends her summer vacation with her grandparents in the mountains, waiting for her mother to come and take her back home. Her mother finally shows up, but only to say farewell before going far away for a voluntary position. But Zephyr is determined that she will not let her mother ever leave her again. Following the viewing, the film will be discussed by psychoanalyst Banu Büyükkal and Belma Baş (director).
