CINEMA EVENINGS CONTINUE AT MODA SAHNESİ...
In its sixth year, Psike Istanbul Cinema Evenings continue in collaboration with Moda Sahnesi. The 2016-2017 cinema discussions are centered on the theme of “Good-Evil” and seek to answer questions such as what is good / what is evil / and how they discretely become interchangeable. The sessions, which will be held monthly on Friday evenings, will consist of film screenings followed by a discussion of the film through a psychoanalytic perspective with Psike Istanbul member psychoanalysts or psychoanalyst candidates and the active participation of directors, actors, experts and the audience.
CINEMA EVENINGS 2016-2017: “GOOD-EVIL”
Major political scandals, ethnic massacres, social oppression and exploitation, global disasters and mass migration strike the national and international headlines like bolts of lightning every day... It is becoming increasingly difficult to find ethical, legal, political and ontological answers to questions such as “What is goodness?” and “What is evil?” Is it possible then to pursue these answers with the aid of the psychoanalytic perspective?
The daily upheaval of national, regional and global dynamics creates a confusion and disorientation. It interrupts the process of thought. Like a traumatic experience it freezes time and leaves the inner world vulnerable to the invasion of repetition. Can we overcome this mental confusion, these repetitions through the means of psychoanalytic thinking? Can we find new and different ways of thinking?
Psychoanalysis attempts to define good and evil outside ethical discourse. In this context, do the concepts of the Death Instinct and the Life Instinct, as defined by Sigmund Freud and developed particularly in the work of Melanie Klein, suffice to help us explain and understand the notions of Good and Evil? How and to what extent do the libido and aggression drives rooted in these instincts overlap with the concepts of Good and Evil? Do the libido and aggression drives, defined in this context, stand in complete opposition to one another or do they occasionally function in cooperation and collaboration?
In George Orwell's famous novel 1984, party official O’Brien seems very certain of the definition of good and evil when he tells Winston Smith, who is resisting the system, to surrender and find peace... How does the so-called experience of “containment” presented by some to the masses “for their own good” turn into an experience that suffocates, “pervades” the psyche?
This year we will trace good and evil and voice our questions accompanied by films. Together, we will try to comprehend, to whet our curiosity and to broaden our range of thought.
The first film we are going to view/work through on the theme of “Good-Evil” is Gandhi (1982) directed by Richard Attenborough. Following the viewing, the film will be discussed by psychoanalyst candidate/psychiatrist Nesli Keskinöz Bilen.
