CINEMA EVENINGS 2018-2019: “FROM UTOPIA TO DYSTOPIA”
In its eighth year, Psike İstanbul Cinema Evenings continue at Moda Sahnesi.
As part of this activity, we found ourselves in a transitional space, in which we could approach various issues around being human through opportunities provided by the art of cinema and the theory of psychoanalysis. In each meeting, we thought, we felt, we sometimes got lost together with the ones who were there, though we always continued to extend our opportunities of thought and expression. Last year, all together, we looked at the sky. As it was in the previous years, the title of this year has emerged from previous meetings: “From Utopia to Dystopia.”
The Word “utopia”, which generated by Thomas More, consists of the union of two different words: Eutopos (Good Place) and Outopos (No Place). In the films of this year, we’ll approach the kaleidoscopic movements, which appears sometimes as dystopia and sometimes as utopia, of the age we are in. We’ll try to include our minds and souls, which oscillate between the “Good Place” and the “No Place”, in the world of meanings, through the means of psychoanalytic reading.
With our belief that naming and finding meaning will transform the darkest dystopias…
The eighth film we are going to view/work through on the theme of “From Utopia to Dystopia” is Dreams(1990) directed by Akira Kurosawa. Following the viewing, the film will be discussed by psychoanalyst Özden Terbaş.
